Acupuncture and Cancer – Acupuncture and Moxibustion are powerful tools to complement conventional cancer therapy, including surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.  For the patient undergoing such therapy, having acupuncture and moxibustion either pre, during or post-treatment can result in these interventions being better tolerated, leading to more successful treatment outcomes.  In particular, they play a significant role in alleviating, and in some cases preventing, the side effects of chemotherapy.  If possible treatment is advised the day before and after.

As well as helping to reduce the side effects of the treatment, it also helps support patient’s emotional well-being throughout the healing process. Patients often experience a myriad of emotions throughout this process.  After the initial diagnosis, treatment plan and hopefully recovery, it can be the mind that takes a little longer to recover from the magnitude of their experience and they return back to daily life.  The initial diagnosis may result in fear, shock and anxiety.  Anger/frustration and ‘why me’ thoughts may also arise.  Worry and concern about the future and other family members will no doubt be part of the picture.

Cancer is dramatically on the rise.  In the late 60’s it was estimated that, amongst people living in the developed world, one in ten or fewer would suffer from cancer in their lifetime.  Today this figure is one in three.  According to the Office for National Statistics the incidence rate for breast cancer in the UK has risen by 70% in the 30 years from 1970 to 2000.
